Montreal to go Offline, New Server, Other Updates

Unfortunately, right after the previous storage incident, another one has arisen.

Currently, Montreal (Omega-123) hosts the archive data. As of May 23, 2024, that data will no longer be available due to the storage account being suspended.

Without this data, Montreal will have no content and therefore will be (hopefully temporarily) shut down.

This will also affect Netherlands, as currently it hosts both new and archived content. All of the archived content will become unavailable. New content will continue to be available but will be run on a First-In-First-Out garbage collection interval. This means when space is low, older content will be removed to make room for new content. Don’t worry, even if old content gets removed, it can still be requested again.

Now for some more positive news.

A new server will becoming available soon named Amsterdam. Amsterdam has a large, local storage pool that will not be affected by outside service providers. In laymen terms, the chance of a similar storage closure is next to nil. It has already been repopulated with half of the archived content.

But Amsterdam is still a 3rd-party server, therefore a step further was taken: A new physical server that will hold all content has been built. This means zero reliance on external services (in exchange for a very high up-front cost 😅). This ultimately means servers may come and go, but the content will always be available. If the performance is fast enough, it will become the source for Montreal (Omega-123). I’ll have more to share on that later.

Summary

  • Montreal (Omega-123) will go offline.
    • It may return at a later date with a new storage backend.
  • Netherlands will only have new content.
    • Once storage is filled, older content will be removed.
  • A new server named Amsterdam will be available shortly with both new and old content.
    • It too will dump older content to make room for new content, but the threshold (18TB) is much, much larger than Netherlands (3TB).
  • A new storage server has been built with a massive capacity so no content should be lost going forward.
